The Blast Furnace is a members-only minigame situated in Keldagrim for smelting bars. The furnace here only requires half as much coal when smelting usually, so it can be useful when smelting the ores that require more coal.

There are 15 Blast Furnace worlds on Old School RuneScape, all of which make soloing the Blast Furnace easy as there are five different dwarves - Dumpy, Stumpy, Pumpy, Numpty, and Thumpy - operating the mechanics of the Blast Furnace, so the player only has to focus on running the ores to the conveyor belt.

Requirements [edit | edit source]

  • Start The Giant Dwarf to gain access to Keldagrim.
  • Smithing level 60 (cannot be boosted) or a 2500-coin fee to smelt bars with the furnace for 10 minutes. Equipping the ring of charos (a) will reduce the entrance fee to 1250 coins, if you go through the Blast Furnace Foreman's dialogue ( Chat 1323) .
  • Ice gloves or bucket of water (optional), used at the bar dispenser to cool the heated bars as they come out. An empty bucket spawn and water source can be found nearby. You can also wait for the bars to cool before taking them out.
  • On Blast Furnace themed worlds, there is an additional 72k gp/hr fee to use the Blast Furnace; players can either place coins in the coffer near the bank chest, or pay the Blast Furnace Foreman directly. On all other worlds, there is no extra fee but players must work together to operate the Blast Furnace.

Travelling and getting to the Blast Furnace [edit | edit source]

The Blast Furnace is located in Keldagrim. To enter Keldagrim, the player must have started the quest The Giant Dwarf by speaking to the Dwarven Boatman within the mines east of Rellekka. The map on the left shows a path the player can take walking from Seers' Village/Camelot to the mines east of Rellekka. Once the player has visited Keldagrim at least once, they can return via mine cart from the Dwarven Mines under Ice Mountain or the Grand Exchange, or use the Grouping teleport to teleport right outside the Blast Furnace building.

Suggested materials/inventory setups [edit | edit source]

A map of the Blast Furnace room itself.

  • Note: Remember to deposit coal first if not working with pure iron or gold!

It is highly recommended to wear weight-reducing clothing to save run energy while moving heavy ore and smelted bars (Note: the Spottier cape and the Boots of lightness will reduce your weight by an additional 1kg over the Graceful cape and Graceful boots). Coins can also be used to pay the Blast Furnace Foreman for more time or to purchase ore there from Ordan. A coal bag is recommended if using an ore that requires coal. For maximum efficiency, stamina potion should be used. A ring of endurance may also prove helpful. If you have less than 60 smithing, you will need to pay a fee every 10 minutes.

The suggested inventory is a bucket of water, a coal bag (if needed), and 26 ore. When using ice gloves, replace the bucket of water with an ore. Withdraw stamina potions and gold as needed depending your level.

Experience rates [edit | edit source]

Full Smithing experience is gained from smelting the bars. There is also an anvil nearby to smith your bars, which the foreman will let you use if you have level 60 Smithing.

At the Blast Furnace, the following Smithing XP can be gained producing bars. Moreover, the following assumes that the player has a coal bag in their inventory and are wearing ice gloves, thus there are 27 inventory slots occupied by ore.

For better rates, use the Barbarian Vial Smash perk unlocked near Barbarian Outpost when sipping energy restores, ideally stamina potions.

Money making guides [edit | edit source]

The Blast Furnace provides a great opportunity for players to reap great profits by producing a large volume of bars.

Note: The table below has already taken into account the 72k per hour for using a designated blast furnace world. These numbers assume the use of a coal bag, ice gloves, and 36 doses of stamina potions per hour. Always check current selling prices, as these numbers can change frequently.

Collecting raw materials [edit | edit source]

Raw materials can be obtained in two ways:

  1. A player can have ore in their bank, and use the bank chest conveniently located in the Blast Furnace itself.
  2. Buy ore from Ordan who runs the Ore Seller shop (up to mithril). Ordan usually sells ore for cheaper than GE price while his stock is 50 or above, so many players choose to supplement their supply of banked ores by buying ore from Ordan when his stock is high. Therefore, on a busy world, Ordan's stock will often be at less than the max of 100 (which is especially true with coal).

Operating the Blast Furnace [edit | edit source]

Mop.png

This article or section requires a cleanup in order to meet the Old School RuneScape Wiki's quality standards.

Reason: Tone
You can edit this page to improve it.

IMPORTANT: All of the other tasks described by the Foreman are done for you by the dwarves running the Blast Furnace on the designated Blast Furnace worlds. For this service, it costs 72,000 coins per hour, but is highly recommended for speed of training.

The process for operating the Blast Furnace is as follows:

  1. Place coal and/or ore on the Conveyor Belt.
  2. Cool down smelted bars with a bucket of water or just collect the bars with the ice gloves equipped.
  3. Collect the bars from the bar dispenser.
  4. Repeat.
Notes
  • Always keep your coal bag full.
  • The max amount of coal which may be placed in the Blast Furnace is 254. Thus, typically the most preferred production method is to first stock coal to 254 before adding primary ores such as Mithril, Adamantite, and Runite ore.
  • The max amount of primary ores such as Mithril, Adamantite, Runite and Gold which you can place is 28. If you try to place more than 28 primary ores without collecting the 28 bars in the dispenser, you will get an error that says "You should collect your bars before making any more." If you notice you're only getting 56 or 57 xp when smelting gold bars instead of 1517 or 1518, you might have forgotten to collect your 27 gold bars. There appears to be an in-game bug that lets you deposit up to 28 more gold ores after having placed 27. Doing this will give you the 56.2 xp for smelting gold bars with the goldsmith gauntlets until you've reached the 28 waiting to be collected, and then you will get 22.5 * the amount of extra gold bars when you collect them. This will show that you have only 28 gold bars to be collected, but there might be up to 55 gold bars to be collected.
  • If you log out or disconnect while only coal is on the conveyor belt, it will be permanently lost. However, if the coal is paired with another ore, such as iron or mithril, it will remain on the belt after disconnecting.
  • If using ice gloves and goldsmith gauntlets, remember not to equip the ice gloves UNTIL the smelting process is complete and you receive the xp drop. Doing so too early will award you 585 xp instead of the usual 1517.

Ordan the Ore Seller [edit | edit source]

The Ore Seller, run by Ordan, is one of many of the stores in Keldagrim and can be found downstairs in the Blast Furnace factory in the eastern side of Keldagrim. This shop stocks ore used for Smithing. The shop is restocked by dwarves that regularly enter the room and deliver a number (around 30) of one type of ore to the shop, rather than restocking 1 of every ore periodically. When the shop reaches 100 of a particular ore type the extra are "sent to storage".

Possible methods [edit | edit source]

Note: There is a maximum of 254 coal and 56 primary (or 28 adamantite) ore in the furnace.

Mithril-processing using the shop [edit | edit source]

Ordan sells a range of ore types, from copper up to mithril, which players can purchase to train Smithing without mining ores. The following process can be used for smelting mithril bars:

  1. Purchase mithril and coal ores from Ordan in a ratio of two coal for every one mithril.
  2. Make two trips with 27 coal or one trip with a coal bag and a full coal inventory.
  3. Operate the Blast Furnace to obtain 27 mithril bars as described in the Operating the Blast Furnace section.
  4. Either put all the bars into the bank using the Blast Furnace bank chest or smith the bars into items and then deposit them.
  5. Repeat these steps until the shop runs out of ores. Coal generally runs out first, so players may need to switch to another world or supplement the store's coal supply with banked coal.

Note that while it is not possible to purchase Adamantite or Runite from Ordan, it is possible to purchase coal from Ordan in order to to make these higher-level bars. However, due to the limited stock and the large quantity of coal required for the higher-level bars, this is not recommended. Instead, use one of the bar patterns described below for smelting the higher-level bars.

Bar Patterns [edit | edit source]

Each bar has an optimal pattern to minimise the amount of running to the bank. Following these patterns you should never have to run back to the bank with ores, and never have to make a trip just to pick up bars. These patterns assume you have a coal bag. It is also easier to keep an extra 27 coal in the furnace too so there is less delay for your bars to be ready.

Level Bar Trip 1 Trip 2 Trip 3 Trip 4 Trip 5
30 Steel bar.png Steel bars 27 Coal, 27 Iron, Collect
50 Mithril bar.png Mithril bars 54 Coal 27 Coal, 27 Mithril, Collect 27 Coal, 27 Mithril, Collect

85 Runite bar.png Runite bars 54 Coal 54 Coal 54 Coal 27 Coal, 27 Runite, Collect 27 Coal, 27 Runite, Collect

Gold + Coal Hybrid Method [edit | edit source]

With the coal bag, making gold and any ore that requires coal (except for Steel) can be a more efficient method for xp and gold generation. An inventory will consist of the coal bag, goldsmith gauntlets, ice gloves, and either 26 gold ore or 26 mithril, adamantite, or runite ore. Because every load of gold ore also adds 26 coal to the furnace due to the coal bag, it results in a hybrid method that produces more gp and xp than otherwise.

Mithril + Gold Hybrid
2:1:1 ratio of coal, gold, and mithril.

Adamantite + Gold Hybrid
3:2:1 ratio of coal, gold, and adamantite.

Runite + Gold Hybrid
4:3:1 ratio of coal, gold, and runite.

Gold Only Mithril Only Gold/Mithril Adamantite Only Gold/Adamantite Runite Only Gold/Runite
Average XP/Trip 1573.6 540 1120.6 506.25 1299.13 540 1420.9
Average GP/Trip -3,220 4,068 1,443 4,779 1,074.67 6,447.6 1,638

As an example, doing 1,000 trips of gold/adamantite would result in 1,299,130 xp and 1,074,666, while 500 trips of gold followed by 500 trips of just adamantite would result in 1,039,925 xp and 779,500.

Hybrid Bar Patterns [edit | edit source]

The following are are the hybrid bar patterns when combining gold and another ore. This method only works on mithril and above, as steel only takes a single trip, eliminating the ability to use the hybrid method. These patterns require a coal bag, and have one less inventory slot due to needing the goldsmithing gauntlets in your inventory. It is recommended to prep the Blast Furnace with an additional 27 coal to cut-down on any coal-transfer wait-time when depositing ore.

Level Bar Trip 1 Trip 2 Trip 3 Trip 4

Trivia [edit | edit source]

  • Contrary to popular belief, the temperature of the stove does not affect the chance of a pipe becoming broken.
  • The conveyor belt that moves the ores into the furnace has three separate sections turning independently. However, only the outer two are connected to the pedal mechanism; the inner one turns by itself.
  • In the Q&A on 11 February 2010, Paul Gower stated that the Blast Furnace was created during an attempt to make a Smithing Guild.
  • Originally, the Blast Furnace did not have dwarves working on the machines. They were added due to player complaints of saboteurs breaking the machines constantly.
  • Oddly, the bar dispenser doesn't work while a dialogue box is open.
